Why we built this

Dowry has been illegal in India since 1961, yet the underlying idea behind it — that a person’s education, income, or skills can be tallied into a number their family should pay or receive — is far harder to legislate away than the transaction itself. Most people who encounter that idea recognize immediately that it’s wrong when it’s stated plainly. It’s much harder to recognize when it arrives dressed as a slick, official-feeling “calculator.”

So we built one. Not to endorse the idea, but to let people feel how easily a human being gets reduced to a figure once you start asking the right questions in the right tone — and then to take that number apart in front of them.

How it works

The experience asks a series of ordinary, even playful questions — about education, career, hobbies, and household skills — and appears to tally them into a live “valuation.” Partway through, that number dissolves on screen, and the experience states its actual conclusion plainly: a person’s worth cannot be calculated, and no number generated here was ever real.
